The Lion, The Spoiler and The Wardrobe

Hello there, Destiny players. I hope you’re enjoying the spoiler season. I assure you today’s cards will not disappoint, I’m unsure if echo3ofclubs held these spoilers back to give to me because they are so great and he wanted to see what I thought of them. I think it must be this as the other option is that he just wanted to give me the newest iteration of the character featured on Jar’kai which you probably know is a card I hate (even if I have used it from time to time) and that would just be mean. Even though there are only two cards to be spoiled in this article, there is a lot to write about so let’s get straight into it.

You may have guessed from the title that we feature a witch today adding to the already formidable Allya that was spoiled elsewhere recently. However, we have a second ARH version of Asajj Ventress back to her Bounty Hunting ways.

Card number 87 from Resurgence brings a huge amount to the table. Let’s try and break it down. The first thing to notice is that her die is a parallel die of the Convergence version of this character so she features in both sets ended in “gence“. Probably the only character that does but that’s just a silly fun fact. Wait a minute, let’s just go back – Card number 87, It’s hard to not think of a villain character when thinking of Asajj but this numbering makes her anything but a villain. She is interestingly a Neutral character giving her a ton more options for pairings. Her die is decent with 50% damage sides, all base sides and rounded out with a discard, resource and a blank. Asajj does have a very sturdy 12 health. I can feel Andrew of Dice Commando’s brain already thinking, “Very Smashable” and he would be absolutely right.

Going down the card, we have a Bounty Hunter and a Witch. Two very useful subtypes. More useful on the villain side I would say but opens up some interesting options for Hero. We did have a neutral witch before in the form of Merrin from Faltering Allegiances which let you have blue curses in your deck but she fell short of what was needed for most of the ARH Meta. I only ever had one deck I liked with Merrin when I paired her with the pirate Kragan Gorr. I like the fact that Merrin has been replaced and those options to create something with crossover downgrades is still available and more likely now as Asajj has broader options. Great Design.

The next sentence is my favourite part of the card. You may include any 4 downgrades in your deck. Not great if you are a villain Asajj player as the only card you can use breaking faction and colour is Grand Theft Speeder from Redemption. Although the look on your opponent’s face when you resolve their Millennium Falcon die might just be worth it. On the flip side if you are a Hero Asajj player and I will be one for trying this then you get a huge choice of 13 villain downgrades to choose from that you wouldn’t have been able to have previously. Cruel Methods, Poison Dart, Inhibitor Chip and Data Heist to name but a few. These options alone make for some great pairings but we’ll come to those later. I guess there is now more than enough scope to be playing Asajj in a Neutral deck and having access to the full pool of downgrades will give some neat extra options [echo7: I’d also like to add here that unlike similar cards that let you include out of affiliation/colour cards that you don’t have to include different cards. There’s nothing stopping you running double Inhibitor Chip in your hero deck].

Next up we have “After setup, this character gain the color Yellow”. This is really useful and makes sense when she is a bounty hunter. She can be used when on her own to play Tusken Camp or Headstrong or even the ever faithful Electroshock making her a perfect partner for a yellow character where cards such as these will always be online. It also makes her dice work with cards that target yellow dice for an effect. Fight Dirty, Hound’s Tooth or Prizefighter for instance. Dare I mention she also gets to take advantage of Den of Thieves [echo7: I especially like the Vile Machinations play, as you can spot her as Blue and Yellow].

Then we have the big barrel of fun that is the Power Action. Reroll two dice. Has to be exactly two dice but could be yours or an opponents giving an option of soft removal or dice correction. The most interesting element is if those rerolled dice now show different symbols then you deal 1 unblockable damage to a character with a bounty. Ingenious little power action that gives this character a lot of utility. God roll comes in – Asajj says try again. That’s a useful back-up plan to have. I have been trying to determine what two dice could guarantee not matching on the reroll and always causing the unblockable damage to trigger. I’m hoping there is a better man than me out there that is able to work it out. Most dice have blank sides which rule them all out immediately but I can’t think of any two where it would be guaranteed. Destiny Community, come to my aid. First one to find a pair of dice where it is guaranteed, DM me the answer on Discord and I’ll send a spot gloss out to you. Good Luck [echo7: done. But let’s see what the community come up with].

The last element of her card is her points cost: 11/14 for 12 health. This costing is going to allow her so many possible pairings. There is scope for Asajj to be in two wide or three wide decks.
On the villain side, I can immediately see pairings with Bossk and Cad Bane on the villain side. Greef Karga could be a useful partner, probably single die with another 7 cost character but he would guarantee you get the downgrades onto the table to activate Asajj’s Power Action. Another spoiled card Zam Wessell could be a good choice naming Witch and leaning to that side of Asajj keeping cards like Magical Ichor or Nightsister Assassins online should Asajj be defeated.

Hero seems to be the more interesting option for Asajj for me. I instantly liked the idea of pairing Asajj with Rex and adding in some Cruel Methods and passing the Battlefield back and forth for some extra damage. You would get full value from the Galactic Struggle card, Rebel Alliance and have three points left for a plot like Profitable Connection, Extra Firepower or Armoured Reinforcement. Thinking of the new Spoilers we could use Karis Nemik to add a resource to Inhibitor Chip in order that we get to use it’s effect on the turn we play it [echo7: ouch!].

On the fully neutral side we have some good options in Embo, Boba Fett and Fennec Shand with maybe High Stakes for Embo and Path to Mastery for the Fennec deck. Greef Karga could be a useful partner too from Neutral, probably single die with another 7 cost character but he would guarantee you get the downgrades onto the table to activate Asajj’s Power Action with the Bounty Board.

Overall, we have a fantastic new character with lots of possibilities for creative deck building. It’s everything you could ever ask for.

I did say there was a lot to discuss and that was only the first card. The second card below is called Life Drain which is a Villain Downgrade – Curse and is going to help make Witches a force to be reckoned with in the Resurgence Meta. Have a look at this.

Isn’t it awesome? For only 1 cost there is the potential to do a damage and heal 1 from a witch every round, so long as the attached character’s controller resolves an odd value character die (of the attached, or any character). A lovely nod to the odd value aligned witches.

Great early card when most players want to resolve those 1 resource sides. Unlike Poison Dart where you need a witch to be constantly monitoring the Dart this can be played in any Blue Villain deck and it’s hard to find a reason not too. Couple it with a red character and the ever fun Tydirium. You could then make any character a witch to get the heal. It may even stop players resolving various 1 sides on their character dice if it triggers this. Maybe a 1 discard or 1 disrupt just won’t feel worth it. This card could essentially protect your turn if this is the case. You get to use that card that would have been discarded or use that money to pay for something they may have been disrupted on another day. The hidden value of this card is great. Life Drain could even stop a resolution full stop if that 1 damage would defeat the character. There is a world where we use Bo-Katan Kryze with Asajj to force the resultion of a 1 damage side with the Bo-Katan Power Action to trigger our Life Drain. That could be fun, probably not good but definitely fun.

In tandem with the aforementioned Poison Dart, it could really punish the character that has these downgrades attached with constant pings on your own turn as you try and play the game. DJ is going to love this card and I can already feel it is going to hurt me badly at some point in the future.

There you have it, two fabulous new cards from the Resurgence set. With all the bounty and curse downgrade love we have seen so far, it does make me wonder if we will see the resurgence (see what I did there) of the Nightsister Lair – Dathomir battlefield to further support and push the amazing array of witches and bounty hunters that will be available to us. It might just be a little too good to bring back and take them a little over the top though. I guess we don’t have long left to find out. Amazing work from Oli’s team once again. Personally, I have no idea where to start with deckbuilding as we have seen so many great cards already and we know it’s not going to stop there. For now though ….

DING DONG, THE WITCH IS ALIVE.

Happy Destiny Saturday
